Allow me to introduce you to Marik Brockman Marik Brockman: Bravitas Advisory I am Marik Brockman and I am a management consultant at Bravitas Advisory. Bravitas is a boutique consultancy firm that helps corporations, startups, and non-profit organizations with their go-to market strategies, innovation programs, designs, and capabilities. Lately, my team and I have been focusing on content strategy and marketing, such as doing whitepapers, ebook, podcasts, blog articles, etc. About 20 years ago, I was in Diamond Technology Partner where I helped large corporations do their digital strategies. Then, the company was bought by PwC, where I served as a partner there for 3 years. After that stint, I decided to move to CSAA Insurance Group, an AAA insurance-based company and one of the 3 biggest companies inside AAA. Not long after that, I decided to move to an independent career, because I knew it was time for me and my family to live where we really wanted to live regardless of what I want to do. I am pleased to meet good clients by using online marketplaces and a little bit of referrals from fellow consultants and former colleagues. While it does still take time for Bravitas to ramp up on projects, I realize that as an independent, you really have to “keep at it” and keep your pipeline going. One of the things I learned in the independent career is that you have to be resilient in your pricing. Once you can do work promotion in your funnel, you can start to be stronger when it comes to this aspect. Aside from having more flexibility on how I spend my time now, being an independent enabled me to NOT do one thing: Sitting in a bunch of other people’s meetings. When you’re working on your own, you don’t need to be on a committee and you get to concentrate more on what you want to do. One of the misconceptions I heard about being an independent is that people think they hire you for just a small job. It’s like they’ve doled out a recipe for you and you just get to make the “sauce.” I’ve cooked an entire meal before and I’m telling you, I’d love to help you with the menu, preparations, quality controls, etc. Some of the challenges I face as an independent are pricing and having the courage to stick to my project. There’s a tradeoff when I realize I can lose my project, and yet I don’t feel like I can pour 40 or 100 hours into it if I’m not charging what I know the project is going to cost. Thankfully, my wife always reminds me to know my worth so I can also give reasonable pricing on the projects and services that I do. On the other hand, one of my proudest moments in my independent career is being able to do a project for a top 5 megatech company. It’s one of the most capitalized companies in the world. Back then, I was tasked to help with the brand’s innovation programs and write ebooks that will help train employees on the next product development engine. For me, having a brand name entrust you with a material is a really great collaboration experience. Learn more about Marik and Bravitas Advisory here.
