Do you want to build a snowman? Check out how Singaporeans experienced a #WhiteChristmas in 2014!

12 Days of Christmas

FROM THE DESK OF MILES EVERSON:

6 days left before Christmas Day!

The Christmas breeze is even more evident from where I am now.

Here in the US, it’s common for us to experience “White Christmas.” During this time of the year, we always have tons of snow everywhere.

But did you know that in 2014, one tropical country also got the chance to experience a White Christmas?

Continue reading below to know how this phenomenon became possible.

Do you want to build a snowman? Check out how Singaporeans experienced a #WhiteChristmas in 2014!

The Lapland Province in Finland is a sparsely populated area bordering Sweden, Norway, Russia, and the Baltic Sea.

The region is known for its vast subarctic wilderness, ski resorts, and natural phenomena such as the midnight sun and the Northern Lights.

During the Christmas season, the province experiences frosty winter and Christmas time polar nights.

On the other side of the spectrum…

Singapore is a Southeast Asian country that is situated near the equator and typically has a tropical climate.

All year round, the country experiences abundant rainfall, high humidity, and high and uniform temperatures as high as 30 degrees Celsius.

With a climate like this, is it possible for Singaporeans to experience a White Christmas?

Highly likely, NO.

However, in December 2014, this phenomenon was made possible in the country, thanks to…

Coca-Cola’s “Share A White Christmas” campaign!

With the help of advertising agency Ogilvy & Mather Singapore, the campaign facilitated connections between people halfway across the world from one another.

How?

Through a Coca-Cola snow dispenser machine placed on both Finland’s snowy Lapland Province and Singapore’s hot and humid city!

Here’s how the campaign worked:

Finns are prompted to throw snow into the machine in Lapland → The machine in Singapore is triggered to release snow → Finns and Singaporeans share a very happy and White Christmas!

The monitor installed on both screens enabled people from the two countries to see each other’s faces and reactions upon experiencing the snow.

Aww, what a sight to see―people from across the globe connecting with one another and sharing the true spirit of Christmas!

Coca-Cola’s “Share A White Christmas” was indeed a heartwarming campaign that communicated the joy of the season.

Because of that, it won 6th place in the “Best in Outdoor Ambient Ads” category at the BestAdsonTV.com in 2015 and a Merit Award at The One Show in the same year!

This proves Coca-Cola has a rich legacy of some of the most groundbreaking ideas in marketing its brand creatively.

According to Pratik Thakar, ASEAN and APAC Head for Content and Design Excellence at the Coca-Cola Company,

“This spectacular video brings to life one of the most exciting parts of the festive season, even in the warm climate of Singapore. It’s not just the snow from Finland being brought to Singapore, but also about strangers from around the world engaging in the true spirit of giving. This is what Coca-Cola is all about―sharing happiness.”

Coca-Cola created a little bit of magic for Singaporeans during the festive period of 2014. By creating a live feed between Singapore and the snowy Lapland Province, the company enabled people, especially children, from both parts of the world to send snow to one another.

Christmas is a time of giving and sharing. Use this as an opportunity for your brand to set up campaigns that let you interact with your target market while helping them feel the spirit of the season.

Your campaign doesn’t necessarily have to be BIG and expensive to make a lasting impression. With the right approach and genuine intentions, you can make your brand a channel of joy, love, and peace this season.

Let’s share a very merry Christmas, everyone!
