Great independent professionals are great innovators… just like this marketer’s techniques!

Neil Patel: Author, Entrepreneur, and Marketer

If you’re familiar with inbound marketing, PPC (pay-per-click), and SEO (search engine optimization), chances are you’re familiar with Neil Patel.

Patel is a 31-year old digital marketing entrepreneur who was born in London, UK on April 24, 1985.

At present, he is a New York Times bestselling author, a top influencer on the Web according to The Wall Street Journal, one of the top 10 marketers according to Forbes, and the creator of one of the 100 most brilliant companies according to Entrepreneur Magazine.

Patel was also recognized as a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 30 by former US President Barack Obama and a top 100 entrepreneur under the age of 35 by the United Nations.

Aside from that, Patel is best known for establishing website services Crazy Egg, Hello Bar, and KISSmetrics.

He also publishes authoritative, long-form content about Google Analytics, Facebook Ads, SEO, and many other business and marketing topics almost every day to help companies achieve their goals.

Looking at these facts, it seems like Patel had his fair share of success at an early stage in life. While that is true, we cannot deny the fact that he didn’t attain this success overnight.

Certainly, Patel experienced challenges too and that wasn’t an easy journey for him. Just like other successful entrepreneurs and marketers, he grew up in a middle-class family.

One of the good things about Patel?

Throughout his journey, he surrounded himself with influential people who exude positive energy! This gave him a positive mentality to be a great leader himself.

So, how exactly did Patel achieve success?

Here’s a bit of a timeline about his life experiences:

At age 15, Patel started selling burned movies and CDs to students for USD 2 to 5 each during his freshman year at the John F. Kennedy High School in California.

He also sold black boxes and hacked satellite TV cards to classmates and their parents. This enabled him to earn a few thousand dollars in profit.

It was also at this age when Patel got his first job at the Knotts Berry Farm, where he was tasked to pick up trash and clean restrooms and vomit.

After his stunt at the farm, he got a job at Quality Systems, which paid a few hundred dollars in commission per sale of Kirby vacuums. Patel went door-to-door convincing homeowners to let him clean their carpets for free, then afterwards attempting to sell the USD 1,600-worth vacuum.

Inspired by the Monster.com business model, Patel saved USD 5,000 to pay for his new website, Advice Monkey.

Then, he found out he had no more money left for advertising.

That’s when Patel decided to learn internet marketing!

After taking his sister’s advice that he take general education college courses at the Cypress Community College, he locked in his first client, Elpac Electronics, at USD 3,500 per month.

He also partnered with his sister’s boyfriend to start an internet marketing agency, Advantage Consulting Services.

Afterwards, he set up Crazy Egg with his business partner, Hiten Shah. Then in 2005, The Wall Street Journal named Patel as one of the top influencers on the Web and a year later, he started his first blog, ProNet Advertising.

Fast forward to 2014…

Forbes recognized Patel as one of the top 10 marketing experts and later in that year, he launched the 100,000 monthly visitor challenge on his personal blog, Neilpatel.com.

Guess what happened?

Patel succeeded in his goal and even educated and inspired millions of readers globally!

Clearly, it’s true when Patel said that “entrepreneurship runs in his blood!”

Patel has always thought about upgrading his and his family’s lifestyle. While he came from an entrepreneurial middle-class family, he constantly thought of various ways to start a business―a successful one!

So, what does Patel’s life experiences imply to you as an independent professional?

Always be on the lookout for ways on how you can make people want the services you offer.

Surround yourself with people who will influence you positively as you go through your journey!

Just like Patel, this will help you succeed and achieve your personal and organizational goals.

Lastly, don’t just think about getting into business and how you can earn profit from it. You also have to make sure that what you’re venturing into is really profitable and is of your interest.
