Allow me to introduce you to Beth Hughes Beth Hughes: Bay Redwood Consulting LLC I am Beth Hughes and I am a change architect at Bay Redwood Consulting LLC. I’m a relatively new independent. I just shifted to this career path this time last year (March 2020). In my practice at Bay Redwood Consulting, I help clients drive positive change. My goal is to help them truly understand the problems they’re facing and turn those into opportunities. Most of my work has been in human services like healthcare, mental health, children’s health, advocacies, and underserved communities. Prior to becoming an independent, I had been in 3 of the world’s largest financial institutions. I started as a commercial lender, then I became a technology leader, risk manager, and change driver. I had also been a strategic financial and growth leader for non-profits. Then, in early 2020, the “perfect storm” (pandemic) happened. That made me see the rising prominence and awareness of social and racial justice, as well as economic equity work. That time, I had a very deep epiphany. I just felt like I needed to direct my work to something that’s more directly connected with improving my community. At that point, I decided to try to figure it out and become a full-time independent to serve the nonprofit sector. MBO was one of the first connections that I made as an independent. That was actually through somebody who’s one of the MBO Advantage members, and he got me involved in something immediately―a bid on a large business process reengineering project for one of the nation’s biggest community college systems. After that, I got involved right away with other independents. That experience turned out to be a really great way to get acquainted with others in this career path and see how they manage their businesses excellently. One of the misconceptions I heard about people in an independent career is that it’s very easy to underestimate the time and work that’s necessary to bring in business. Once you decide to become an independent, you’re not only identifying clients but also identifying opportunities with those clients. I think a lot of people think of independents as very easy and free, like we go and do whatever we please, work on whatever we want to work on, etc. That’s obviously not how it works. Anticipation isn’t anything like the actuality. For me, independents are giving more attention, personalized degree of service, and focus on their clients.
